Andalusia at CM
The distinctive theme of Andalusia at Coral Mountain coalesced during several scouting trips the principal planners made to southern Spain while designing La Quinta’s newest luxury community.

Expense was not spared in recreating the master-planned community of 700 homes on 1000 prime acres nestled alone the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains.

Andalusia Country Club offers six 3- and 4-bedroom floorplans, approximately 2,900 to 5,000 square feet. All models are characterized by open great rooms, entry courtyards, and 12’ sliding glass doors opening up to spacious covered patios and spectacular golf-course views. Current pricing is from $1M to $1.75M.

The first of two planned golf courses was designed by Rees Jones—designated number two of the top five course architects in the world by Golf Digest Magazine—his very first in the Coachella Valley. Extensive use of water features—45 acres of water alone—punctuate the 7,521-yard course that is designed for every level of golfer.

Other community amenities include a world-class Racquet Club & Fitness Center, clubhouse with Tapas restaurant, and walking/biking/hiking trails.

Andalusia Country Club was designed by Drummond Real Estate, also the developer of popular Rancho La Quinta Country Club.Click Here for more details on Adalusia.

Bighorn Golf Club
Bighorn Golf Club occupies a special place in the desert`s taxonomy of country-club communities. Perched on the southernmost tip of Palm Desert`s ascending desert floor, Bighorn straddles both sides of the Palms-to-Pines highway, each portion backing up to the Santa Rosa Mountains. Boasting an incredible canyon-like entrance, with bighorn-sheep sculptures gamboling along the crest, the club promises and delivers unique delights.

Two championship golf courses define the club`s man-made beauty; the development`s natural setting completes the stunning package. There`s even a natural oasis of California fan palms with a legacy as a favorite hot spot for Hollywood royalty including Frank Sinatra and Gene Autry.

The Mountains at Bighorn Golf Club was designed in 1991 by Arthur Hills, who incorporated the natural splendors with a course offering spectacular elevations but accessible to all levels of play. Seven years later, Tom Fazio unveiled the Canyons Course on the east side of the club, offering up wide, rolling fairways and amazing water features. Players are immersed in a complete desert oasis. Three holes—the 16th, 17th and 18th—are widely regarded as the best in the desert.

Bighorn offers five dining establishments, a 40,000sf clubhouse with magnificent down-valley views, and a Starbucks-serving Marketplace for grab-and-go items. The 13,000sf Spa & Salon completes the world-class amenities of this stellar enclave.

Bighorn properties encompass Villas (2,600sf to 4,000sf), custom homes (4,000sf and up), and lots. Prices currently range from the high $1Ms to $11M.Click Here for more details on Bighorn Golf Club

Griffin Ranch
Griffin Ranch doesn’t have sidewalks; it has riding trails. This unique equestrian-themed community debuted in mid 2007 and forgoes golf cleats for horseshoes. Built on the grounds surrounding Merv Griffin’s estate, the eponymous community was carefully designed by the entertainer and proudly unveiled one year before his death.

Set amidst 239 acres next door to PGA West, Griffin offers four distinct collections of floorplans ranging in size from 2559sf to 5929sf. One-acre homesites are also available for custom homes. The architectural styles encompass Tuscan, Andalusian, Spanish Colonial and contemporary Mexican with spacious lot sizes from 10,000sf to 20,000sf.

At the heart of the development is The Griffin Club, an Andalusian-inspired 22,000sf ranch clubhouse. It includes dining, meeting rooms, wine room, fitness center, salon, pool/spa and tennis courts. Adjoining Griffin Ranch will be The Saddle Club, a full-service equestrian facility with arenas, dressage, clubhouse, and boarding for 90 horses. It will sport the largest covered and misted riding arenas in the Coachella Valley.

Original home prices ranged from $795K to $1,793M. Because of the development’s debut at the height of the market, the development is selling on a smaller scale and there have been some distress sales.Click Here for more details on Griffin Ranch

Haciendas at La Quinta
Haciendas at La Quinta is a small gated enclave of appealing homes off 50th Avenue at Eisenhower, just down the street from The La Quinta Resort. Built within the past decade, the newer community has low HOAs of $155. Current listings are in the $500K to $800K range and there have been one or two distress sales in the past year, a situation replicated in every desert community.

Heritage Palms CC
Heritage Palms Country Club is a wonderful active-retirement community for those 55 and older. Often overlooked by its much-larger Sun City brethren to the north, this club of only 1003 homes exudes a more intimate feel.

Located off Jefferson (@Miles and @Fred Waring), Heritage Palms has an Indio address, straddles La Quinta and Bermuda Dunes, and offers easy freeway access and proximity to shopping and dining. New shopping centers boasting drugstores, restaurants, coffee shop, salon, and a soon-to-debut Fresh ‘N Easy are only a golfcart ride away!

Homes range in size from 1400sf to 2500sf and most line the Arthur Hills-designed championship golf course, one of the Valley’s nicest. Offering 6722 yards of par-72 play, the course has no initiation fees and is completely owned by the club residents. Flexible membership offers three ways to play: unlimited play for $3,050/ person or $5750/couple; coupon book of 50 rounds for $2500; or pay-as-you-play.

The clubhouse boasts a newly renovated restaurant and lounge, fitness center and indoor and outdoor pools. There are four lighted tennis courts and numerous social and fitness activities. This country-club lifestyle commands HOAs of only $250.Click Here for more details on Heritage Palms CC.

Hidden Canyon
Hidden Canyon is one of my favorite communities in La Quinta. Tucked in the curve of Eisenhower as it heads toward the historic La Quinta Resort, this gated development is nestled in a canyon of the Santa Rosa Mountains. The perimeter homes in the comfortable enclave of 169 homes literally have a mountain in their backyards and all the homes boast formidable views. Even multi-million dollar clubs in the valley can’t match the magnificent setting.

Hidden Canyon debuted in 2005 and was built by TransWest, a local builder chosen by Merv Griffin to develop his own Griffin Ranch. They snagged the last choice undeveloped pieces of land in central La Quinta and the resulting project is wonderfully situated—within minutes of Old Town La Quinta, shopping and dining on 111, and SilverRock, the city’s championship-level golf course.

The development’s six home plans—either Ridge View or Ridge Gate floorplans—have a Mediterranean flair and range in size from 2390 sf to 3589sf. Many have casitas. The homes boast granite kitchens, 8’ paneled interior doors, smooth exterior stucco, formal dining room,s 9’- to 10’-height ceilings, and many energy savings features.

HOAs are remarkably low—$185—since residents do not support a golf course or 24-hour guards.

Indian Ridge
Indian Ridge Country Club warrants all the accolades. From the moment you enter the front gate with its distinctive illuminated obelisks and navigate the lushly landscaped streets, you know this is a special country club. From the car, you glimpse tantalizing views of the two Arnold Palmer-designed championship courses but it’s the homeowners who command the most expansive, stellar views of fairway, lakes and mountain vistas.

An equity golf club, Indian Ridge boasts 1068 homes on 640 acres in Palm Desert off Country Club Drive. Built by Sunrise Company from 1993 to 2006, there are 467 condominiums and 601 homes. The main clubhouse and restaurant encompasses 42,000sf while the separate sports club comprises an additional 22,000 sf. Tennis is front and center with 14 courts while croquet can be played on two grass lawns.Click Here for more details on Indian Ridge.

La Cantera
La Cantera in La Quinta is a marvelous little gem of a community, only 60 luxurious homes tucked in gated community off Avenue 52, west of the Jefferson roundabout and across from the exclusive Hideway club. With architecture inspired by Santa Barbara’s iconic Spanish-Moorish architecture, Vista La Quinta partners designed one- and two-story semi-custom mini estates situated on gently curving streets.

There is no golf course or guard-gated entrance, therefore the HOAs—which include front landscaping—are a reasonable $232. The richly painted homes boast casitas, granite, smooth exterior stucco, sky decks and expansive patio overhangs to enjoy the indoor/outdoor desert lifestyle. Energy-efficient features include tankless water heaters and insulated exterior walls.

The intimate community debuted in 2005 and offered five floorplans with footage ranging from 2300sf to 3480sf. Prices started at $690K and went up to $800K. Two years later, the prices soared to the $800Ks and $900Ks. Since the market downturn, there have been a handful of distress-sale bargains appear which are quickly snapped up.Click Here for more details on La Cantera.

La Quinta Fairways
La Quinta Fairways is a unique community in a city replete with expensive country clubs. The Dunes Course of the historic La Quinta Resort & Club meanders through the development, giving residents the luxury of golf course venues and views without the concomitant price-tag.

The Dunes course—the first Pete Dye-designed course in the Coachella Valley, and the Resort’s Mountain Course are public courses but La Quinta Fairway residents receive preferred tee times.

The guard-gated development does not have a clubhouse or community pools. Reasonable HOAs of $216 cover the security, common landscaping, trash, and front-yard landscaping. The homes—located both on and off the course—were built from 1991 to 2001. Floorplans offer both one- and two-stories from 2,000sf to 3,000sf.

Wonderfully located off Washington and 50th, La Quinta Fairways is located equidistant to both downtown La Quinta and bustling Hwy 111 shops and restaurants.

LQCC Club La Quinta
La Quinta Country Club
Founded in 1959 and dedicated the next year by President Eisenhower, La Quinta Country Club has a rich past and compelling present. Originally owned by nearby La Quinta Resort—with its own storied past dating to 1926—was purchased by club members in 1977 to become an equity membership club.

The course—built by Larry Hughes—is continually rated one of the desert`s best, and offers a traditional layout to test all skill levels. It`s one of the four courses played during the annual Bob Hope Classic and one of the professional golfers` favorites.

The new Santa Barbara-styled clubhouse opened in Fall 2009 and offers dining, Pavilion ballroom, men`s and women`s card rooms, and state-of-the-art fitness facilities, including yoga and Pilates classes.

There are 515 homes on and off the golf course, ranging from homes in La Quinta Country Club Estates, La Quinta Country Club Golf Estates, and Montero Estates. Condos include The Villas of La Quinta and Country Club Estates Condos. Architectural styles encompass Spanish Colonial, contemporary and even Mid-century Modern.Click Here for more details on La Quinta CC.

Mountain View CC
Mountain View Country Club is one of the newer country clubs in La Quinta, debuting in 2003 and now selling final-phase homes and condos. Built around an 18-hole Arnold Palmer Signature Course, the award-winning Toll Brothers development features Spanish Colonial architecture, a beautiful clubhouse and restaurant, and an expansive 7,000sf tennis, spa and fitness center. Community pools punctuate the enclave.

This club has a very wide-open feel to it with many of the homes perched on bluffs overlooking the expansive fairways.

Upon completion, the guard-gated community will number 425 semi-custom homes (Villas, Reserve and Vistas collections, 2500sf to 4,400sf) and 50 condominiums (Village). Located on Jefferson Street in La Quinta, Mountain View boasts a vibrant social scene and flexible membership options for golf and social privileges.

Because of the market downturn, there are amazing bargains to be found in Mountain View. When the Village condos debuted in 2006, prices ranged from $630K to $985K while home prices ranged from $900K to $2M. Current prices now range from the $400Ks to $1M+ with distress sales appearing sporadically.Click Here for more details on Mountain View CC.

Palmilla
Palmilla is a unique oasis in La Quinta and the entire Coachella Valley. Built around seven acres of lakes, Palmilla offers a water-oriented community instead of the traditional golf-course country club.

From the handcrafted entry gates and wrought iron flowers rising from fountains to the curving street signs, Palmilla’s design aesthetic is evident in the whimsical desert sculptures commissioned for this remarkable community of only 159 homes.

The striking contemporary homes—clad in rich hues of ocher and salmon—offer stepped living spaces, floor-to-ceiling glass, stone veneers, smooth plaster, French doors, sunken wet bars, casitas, and richly-appointed kitchens.

Guard-gated but forgoing clubhouse or community pools, Palmilla eschews the country club amenities for a different take on the club lifestyle.

Debuting in 2001, Palmilla offers six floorplans ranging in size from 2,900sf to 4,600sf.

Built by RJT Homes, Palmilla is centrally located on 50th at Jefferson. The development garnered many prestigious building awards for its innovative designs.Click Here for more details on Palmilla

PGA Greg Norman
PGA West, “The Western Home of Golf in America”, is La Quinta’s (and the Coachella Valley) largest golf-centric development. Covering more than 2,200 acres in south La Quinta, the sprawling master-planned community consists of six notable golf courses, 1400 homes and condos, three clubhouses, and world-class tennis and fitness facilities.

With the gorgeous Santa Rosa Mountains embracing its homes and links, PGA West offers unparalleled beauty, sports and social activities to its lucky residents. The 25,000 sf Stadium clubhouse remodel was unveiled last year and offers indoor/outdoor dining with an expansive view of the Stadium and Nicklaus courses. A “grab & go” market was added for resident convenience and two impressive three-dimensional maps of the club’s most famous holes allow guests to feel the contours of the courses.

Begun in 1985, PGA West now hosts six spectacular golf courses designed by Arnold Palmer, Pete Dye, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Weiskopf and Greg Norman. Lee Trevino’s hole-in-one on number 17—“Alcatraz”–made the annals of golf lore during the 1988 Skins Game. Ditto for David Duvall’s eagle on the 18th of the Palmer Private to win the 1999 Bob Hope Golf Classic.

Sun City
Sun City Palm Desert, the first of of the desert’s two Del Webb communities in the Coachella Valley, debuted in 1992 and finished selling in 2002. Located off Washington Street north of the 10 freeeway about 15 miles east of Palm Springs, the active-retirement community is designed for adults 55 and older and is a veritable mini-city of almost 5000 homes and 9,000 residents (a third of whom are seasonal residents).

Although it’s technically in an unincorporated area, the community draws its mail through the Palm Desert post office and incorporated that city into its moniker. The development is in the shadow of the Little San Bernadino Mountains and Indio Hills, and the 13,000-acre Coachella Valley Preserve–one of my favorite hiking areas—is only a few miles up the road.

The dynamic development boasts three clubhouses, 27 holes of golf, 80+ social clubs, four restaurants, indoor and outdoor pools, lawn bowling, two gyms, 600-seat ballroom/theater, and its own magazine.

The par 72, 36 hole golf course was designed by PGA Tour players Billy Casper and Greg Nash. The club is divided into two courses: the San Gorgonio (6,669 yards) and the Santa Rosa (6,720 yards).

The Citrus
The Citrus Club in La Quinta offers a variety of homes, a brand new fitness center with lap pool, and one of the valley’s most challenging golf courses—served up in a an appealing citrus-themed, white-stucco-and-red-roofed country club. Wonderfully located off Jefferson in central La Quinta, the mature club—begun in 1988 on the grounds of citrus groves—continues to reinvent itself with new additions. Last year, The Citrus debuted three final communities—Twenty at the Citrus, The Cove, and The Gold Reserve (12 huge, elevator-equipped estates).

Designed by Pete Dye, the club’s distinctive course—which plays 6800 to 7200 yards—winds through orange, lemon and grapefruit trees and has hosted numerous major PGA events. I first traipsed the course following players during The Lexus Challenge hosted by Raymond Floyd.

Architectural styles feature both Spanish Colonial and contemporary and represent several developers who built semi-custom homes over the past two decades.Click Here for more details on The Citrus CC

The Hideaway
The Hideaway is among the most luxurious of La Quinta’s top-drawer developments. Sprawling over 600 acres, the guard-gated enclave is a veritable refuge of beauty and elegance. With the encircling Santa Rosa Mountains as a dramatic backdrop, all 446 homes have sumptuous views.

This unabashedly posh country club chose its moniker in honor of the desert’s historical reputation as a hideaway for Hollywood stars. Current residents are afforded a swanky lifestyle complete with concierge service.

The club’s residences are divided into three main property types: custom homes, bungalows & villas, and homesites of one-third to one-half acres.

The Hideaway Golf Club features two unique and dramatic, par 72, 18-hole courses, one designed by famed British architect Clive Clark and the other by the legendary Pete Dye. The former plays to 7,000 yards while the latter to 7,100. The two courses are visually compelling masterpieces, punctuated by flowers, waterfalls, lakes and streams. The invitation-only, private equity memberships ensure no more than 290 members per 18 holes.

At the heart of the development lies the 45,000sf Spanish Revival-styled clubhouse, offering fine dining, spa, fitness center, pool and tennis courts.Click Here for more details on The Hideaway.

The Palms
Known for its fast, bentgrass greens, walk-on tee-times and verdant fairways, The Palms Golf Club stands apart from its esteemed La Quinta country club brethren. A haven for golf afficionados, the club extends its social privileges to all golf members, most of whom are single-digit handicappers.

Designed by resident Fred Couples with Brian Curley, the actual course was laid out on the grounds of a former date-palm orchard. The 18-hole course features 7,020 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 70. All 101 homes are built around the perimeter of the course, giving golfers and homeowners expansive views of fairways and the nearby Santa Rosa Mountains.

More than 2,000 date palms, 1,000 mesquite tree and producing citrus trees set the theme for this unique course. Three creeks meander through the course and players are given the choice of walking or riding.

Property at The Palms includes Golf Villas, semi-custom homes, custom homes and homesites.

The Golf Villas, built in the first phase of development, have east-facing views, 2- to 4-bedrooms, and range in size from 2,400 to 3,111 square feet.

The Quarry
What an amazing community. Tucked into the southernmost hills of the Santa Rosa Mountains, entering The Quarry is like entering a secret hideaway. The custom estates blend into the gorgeous terrain and tantalizing glimpses of the Tom Fazio golf course beckon you onto the links.

This world-famous enclave debuted in 1994 and is notable for its privacy and exclusivity. The award-winning golf course is rated in the top three of the entire Valley. Tom Fazio started with an old gravel pit. From these inauspicious beginnings, he carved The Quarry, a unique course that is permanently ensconced on Golf Digest’s list of the 100 top American courses. It has been dubbed the “golfer’s golf course.”

Featuring three distinct elevations, golfers experience a gradual elevation change of 300 feet. The tee markers honor the earth’s bounty by being fashioned from black obsidian, calcite and rose quartz. The 18-hole, par 72 course plays 7,083 yards. Rated a 73.7, it has a slope rating on the Bermuda grass of 135. Tee times are never required.

Noted one of the Top 100 Golf Communities in the U.S. by Travel and Lesiure magazine, The Quarry homesites have breathtaking panoramic views of La Quinta city lights, the mountains close and far, and the meandering golf links. The clubhouse features private dining, a full-service pro shop, health spa, and tennis facilities.Click Here for more details on The Quarry.

The Reserve

The Reserve, one of the most exclusive clubs in the valley, combines rich amenities with low-key warmth. Adjacent to the renowned zoological gardens of The Living Desert, The Reserve, like its neighbor, straddles two cities—Palm Desert and Indian Wells. The Santa Rosa Mountains embrace the private-membership community whose homes overlook the undulating Tom Weiskopf-Jay Morrish championship golf course (which includes three practice holes), lakes and water features, or mountain terrain.

The Health & Fitness Center has recently been expanded and offers the finest sports facilities in the Valley.

Homes are divided into three categories: Bungalows—an enclave of 3-bedroom homes close to the Tuscan-styled clubhouse with floorplans ranging from 2,559 to over 3,000 square feet. Some feature private pools but all have access to a reserved pool/spa; Casita Homes—3 and 4B zero-lot homes ranging from 3,150 to 3,750 square feet; and Custom Homes, luxury homes by master builders on custom view lots ranging from 3,000 to over 10,000 square feet.

The Tradition
Tradition Country Club is a truly special enclave, located at the southern end of Washington Street near downtown La Quinta. Conceived by Arnold Palmer in 1997, this unpretentious enclave exudes quiet elegance. The unmarked bouganvillea-clad entrance and 1920s Spanish Colonial architecture mark Tradition as a special country club.

Exquisite custom homes and home sites—many of them elevated—wrap around the Coral Reef Mountains and offer sumptuous views of links and mountains. Palmer designed the course to flow around the mountain base and then built himself both a personal home and restaurant offering his favorite foods—the eponymous Palmer’s across the street.

Tradition is rated by Travel and Leisure magazine as one of America`s Top 100 Golf Communities. There’s even a 9-hole par 3 course to further the sports experience.

Trilogy
Trilogy at La Quinta offers luxurious country club living at an affordable price if you’re lucky to be 55 and over. With top-drawer amenities and championship-level golf, Trilogy truly offers something for everyone.

Nestled along the very base of the Coral Mountains—part of the Santa Rosas framing the Coachella Valley—at the southern tip of La Quinta but only a short drive to shops and restaurants, Trilogy offers both tranquility and incredible beauty. PGA West is right up the street.

The stunning golf course, designed by Gary Panks, has hosted many tournaments, including the PGA Tour’s LG Skins Game from 2003-2006. I remember doing a family-tour of the Valley one Thanksgiving weekend and spying Tiger Woods on the links with his entourage. The course—7,175 yards from the championship tees—accommodates all levels of players with its five sets of tees. The architect admirably integrated the course contours within the inimitable natural desertscape. Even though the Valley boasts 100+ golf courses, this one is special.

Now in its final phase of selling, Trilogy will have 1200 homes upon build-out. There are 12 floorplans to choose from among three home collections—Coral, Mariposa and Santa Rosa. Homes ranges in size from 1,381sf to 2,769sf; several offer detached casitas. Architectural styles span Mediterranean, Spanish and Tuscan.

The heart of the dynamic club is the 21,000 sf Santa Rosa Club, a well-appointed campus offering a cafe, Coral Spa, fitness, Jr. Olympic-sized pool with overhead running track, ballroom, aerobics/yoga/Pilates studio, outdoor pool, etc. The list of amenities is impressive.

If you’re intrigued with a 5-star resort lifestyle for a fraction of the cost, Trilogy is a must-see.Click Here for more details on Trilogy.
